Car Museum - 2015

Graded Unit

In my second year of study we were tasked with designing either a sports facility or a museum as part of our end of year. I chose a museum as I felt it the most promising. The use of the museum was up to ourselves to choose and I chose a car museum.

The car museum was to showcase famous and unique cars from around the world. Part of our brief stated that we were to bring tourism to Inverness with our building and the attractions it held. Inverness has its history museum in the town centre but nothing to the scale that could house a vehicle. Originally I wanted cars to seemingly be suspended from the roof, however it proved costly.

The actual shape of the building is based on the spoiler fin of as Escort RS Cosworth, a timeless classic in the car industry. The front entrance arches are loosely based on the spot lights sometimes used on Escort Rally Cars grill to improve visability.

Model Making - 2015/17

As a method of presenting our designs in group and singular projects, I always found it good to physically build the model you are trying to clarify.

Snap Shelter - This Shelter is the last group model I did. It was designed to be a fully functional 1:10 scale model. Every connection and hinge was made to scale and in working order. Velcro was used to imitate fixtures securing panels into place.

The Cog - This was the first time I had actually used a 3D printer but the result was great! It took hours and hours to complete but the amount of detail was exceptional.

Brackla Harbour - This was the model in which I dappled with the idea of making a physical 3D topography out of expanding foam. Minus the foam and glue I used all natural materials locally sourced (the garden!) to construct it. The client liked natural materials and I hoped to impress them by taking this into account.

Student Accommodation - The student accommodation is by far the most detailed model I have made by hand. It is an exact scale of the site and its decoration. The buildings are all individually lined horizontally with hand stained wooden strips and cornered with a stone effect print out.

Car Museum - The car museum was the first ever scaled model I constructed for this course. It took quite some time and I tried to achieve as much detail as possible. I think the model defiantly helped me to portray this.
