Brackla Harbour Shelter - 2015/16

Final Project

Located along the side of Loch Ness is Brackla Harbour. This is where we were tasked with creating a shelter for the customers waiting to board the Jacobite Cruise, and also an experience centre for Frieda Newton.

The client, Frieda, stated that she liked things with a natural look to them. No bright colours or garish designs. This is when I came up with the picket fence idea for my shelter. The shelter would mainly be constructed from 1 single steam pressed piece of wood which would then have slots cut out of them and replaced with a transparent plastic.

Going along with the natural plan was the concept of having a tree growing up the centre of the shelter and through the roof. A slow growing tree would be planted after the installation of the shelter. When the tree grew too big the shelter would be removed, leaving the tree to flourish naturally where the shelter once sat.

Brackla Harbour Experience Building - 2015/16

Final Project

Along with the introduction of a shelter to the site, an experience building was also proposed. This building would serve a dual purpose by housing toilets for customers while also creating a private section for the client to use personally.

Apart from the public toilets the small building also contained a meeting room big enough for 8 people, a music recording room complete with soundproof walls, a lounge with views over Loch Ness and of course a private bathroom.

In keeping with the shelters design, the building received similarly cut out windows with the picket effect to them. The approach side of the building has a smooth flowing metal roof which reaches all the way to the ground. Larch clads the majority of the rest of the wall with the small exception of the stone tile effect on the protruding rooms.

As with my other models, the complete landscape was modelled by myself to the highest detail that I was capable of at the time.
